25th Anniversary Gala in Vancouver, BC

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

The Choir celebrated their 25th Anniversary Gala in Vancouver on September 29, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. A fitting place for this celebration as Vancouver is also where the Choir started in 1984 and held their first performances.

Proceeds from tickets to the event as well as from the auctions held on the night are all designated to complete our new African Children’s Choir Primary School on the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda. You can read more about this project on our website, and can make a donation to the completion of the project here.

A significant highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Mailaika Award to Bob Geldof in recognition of the work he has done focusing the attention of countries on the issues of African Debt Relief and Poverty Relief

Ray Barnett pointed out that Bob Geldof has been working at the other end of the spectrum to the Choir. Where the Choir perform their work on the ground with individuals, Bob Geldof has been working at generating the necessary political will to move the governments, so that the individuals the Choir are working with can eventually find themselves in a climate where they too are able to excel.

The event turned out spectacularly well with guests including Paul Rodgers of Bad Company and Queen, Beth Nielsen-Chapman and Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers all putting in fantastic performances with the Choir.
